In Our Hands

Rustling leaves, a flash of orange hair, then suddenly an outstretched hand lowered itself from the canopy. My first ever Orangutan sighting.

97%. That’s how much of our DNA we share with Orangutans. I had read that statistic before going to look for them, but it didn’t really sink in until I was looking at this hand reaching out to me from the trees. I was speechless. In fact, I completely forgot that I had a camera in my hand until the last second! I had hoped to find an image which alluded to this closeness between us but I couldn’t have planned for something so perfect.

It was truly an honour that this Sumatran Orangutan image was featured in the fantastic Remembering Great Apes charity book to raise funds for wildlife conservation. These incredible animals are now critically endangered due to deforestation, poaching and other threats, and now their fate is in our hands.
