You know what they say: the early bird gets the worm. So it's a shame that this bird doesn't eat worms...
Goliath Herons are the largest herons in the world, standing as tall as 150cm and weighing up to 5kg. They were high on my hope-I-see-it list before visiting Africa, and this was actually my first ever sighting of one: at sunrise, with ridiculous light flooding over everything, silhouetted against a misty lake. In fact I was so overwhelmed that I almost didn't get a photo - moments after getting my act together and taking this picture it flew away. Like all the best wildlife encounters, the moment itself was fleeting but the memory of it has stuck.
